Not even the return of injured Germany midfielder Thorsten Frings and top goalscorer Diego from suspension could end the poor run for the green-and-white, albeit they earned a hard-fought point. Defender Oliver Kirch put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute. A cross from Artur Wichniarek glanced off Tim Wiese?s hands and Kirch was the man on the spot, only needing to tap the ball into the open goal. Bremen?s Markus Rosenberg had three top-notch chances to equalise in the first half alone but, as Werder?s bad luck would have it of late, the Swede failed to do so. After the interval, Bremen put on an at times extremely harmless effort only to win a penalty kick 20 minutes from time. Diego stepped up and scored it, but a draw against a near relegation side must have the coach and managerial staff wondering what has happened to the one-time scoring machine that made them a feared side against all opponents. Hertha Berlin 1 Schalke 2 Schalke proved to be too much for an outclassed Berlin squad on Sunday. Gerald Asamoah and Jermaine Jones both struck for the Royal Blues in the first 23 minutes. After that, Berlin certainly had the upper hand and they got a deserved goal in the 67th minute when Sofian Chahed converted a penalty kick. But in the final part of the match, Berlin lacked the energy needed to get the equaliser and Schalke showed that the depth of their bench over 90 minutes could make a big difference in the final stage of this season. Coach Mirko Slomka?s side leaves the German capital with three points. The Royal Blues were certainly the biggest benefactor at the top of the table this weekend after Leverkusen?s loss to Bayern Munich and draws by Hamburg and Bremen.
